From Tools to Transformation - Embedding Innovation Where It Matters

In the “Augmenting Digitisation and AI Effectively” panel, we explored the difference between isolated capabilities and integrated solutions. Tools can optimise a single step. But if they don’t connect across workflows, they simply shift bottlenecks downstream. Everyone wants AI to drive faster decisions, but if the next stakeholder can’t use the output, it’s useless.

At IMDEX, we’re focused on building solutions that support the entire workflow. Our BLASTDOG™ product is a great example. It captures high-quality subsurface data, but its real value comes when that data flows seamlessly into engineering and planning systems. That’s systems thinking in action.

We also talked about where AI fits best: processes that are repetitive, data-rich, and tolerant of some error. That’s a narrower scope than the hype suggests. Pre-drilling exploration is challenging due to limited training data.

But in well-instrumented, long-running operations, AI can add real value - if it’s embedded properly and designed for long-term resilience.

In the “Funding Innovation in Mining” panel, the conversation shifted to how we sustain innovation. Most mining tech development isn’t venture-backed,  it’s industry-led, with funding models better suited to mining’s pace. At IMDEX, we invest 8–10% of revenue into R&D every year, through every cycle. That consistency builds capacity for the upturns and ensures we’re ready to scale when the opportunity arises.

Our approach is simple but powerful: build the right products, execute with discipline, and use targeted M&A to accelerate or fill capability gaps. That’s how we’ve brought Datarock, Earth Science Analytics, and Krux into the IMDEX fold - each one expanding our digital offering and helping us deliver integrated, usable solutions across the mining value chain.

But funding alone isn’t enough. We need to embed innovation into operations, partner differently, and take shared accountability for adoption. In a market with declining technical skills, telling mining companies to “get better at change” won’t work. Real success comes from co-designing solutions, embedding technical teams, and supporting change management from day one.

Australia’s mining innovation ecosystem is now mature enough to connect miners, tech developers, and test environments effectively. AI acts as a leveller - we’re all adopting at the same pace, and that opens the door to leapfrog ahead.

The opportunity is real. But success depends on systems thinking, sustainable investment, and a relentless focus on solving our customers’ problems.
