Enhancing Driver Safety with IVMS - IMDEX’s Global Commitment

Safety Challenge: Reducing Road Risks

Vehicle incidents are a leading safety concern in the mining and resources sector. Over the past three years, mobile equipment and transportation incidents have remained the leading cause of fatalities across International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) member companies—responsible for 9 deaths in 2022, 9 in 2023, and 9 in 2024—consistently representing around one-fifth of all mining fatalities worldwide and underscoring the sector’s ongoing challenge in managing vehicle-related risks ^{1 2}. IMDEX recognised the need for a data-driven approach to monitor, understand, and improve driving behaviours across its global operations.

IMDEX’s Solution: Global IVMS Implementation

The IVMS tracks a range of driving events, including speeding and other safety-related incidents. It provides real-time insights that empower both drivers and managers to prevent accidents before they occur. The system was implemented alongside Driver Coaching to help our team recognise incidents and actively manage them.

IVMS continues to support safe driving by offering:

• Real-time alerts for speeding, harsh braking, and fatigue
• GPS tracking and geofencing to enhance route safety and compliance
• In-cab cameras and diagnostics for coaching and incident review

Beyond safety, IVMS enables IMDEX to monitor fuel usage, kilometres driven, and vehicle utilisation. This capability not only supports safer driving but also allows us to identify opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and managing emissions, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.

Safety Outcomes

Since the global rollout of IVMS, IMDEX has achieved:

• A 12-month reduction in ‘at risk events’ and ‘speeding events’
• A reduction in severity points (a scoring metric used by IVMS to quantify the risk level of driving behaviours) per kilometre driven
• Noticeably improved driving behaviours across the fleet

These improvements reflect a safer, more accountable driving culture, with data-driven feedback helping employees make better decisions on the road. The environmental data captured by IVMS also enables us to track and report on our progress toward emissions reduction, supporting both our internal sustainability goals and those of our customers.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Improvement

IMDEX is committed to ongoing enhancement of the IVMS program. Future plans include standardising data collection and further refining the system to maximise its safety and environmental benefits.
