Why Latin America's Mining Sector Continues to Drive Global Exploration

Latin America continues to play a vital role in global mineral supply, supported by some of the world's largest copper, lithium, gold, and silver resources, strong exploration investment, and a growing focus on innovation across the mining sector. As exploration targets become more complex and demand for critical minerals continues to rise, mining companies are increasingly looking for technologies and workflows that improve data quality, operational efficiency, and confidence in decision-making.

At Discoveries 2026 in Hermosillo, Mexico, Diana Catarino and her team joined exploration professionals, mining companies, and industry leaders to gain firsthand insight into the trends shaping mining across the region. The event provided an opportunity to learn how organizations are addressing exploration challenges through trusted data, improved workflows, and greater collaboration across the mining value chain.

A Region Positioned for Continued Growth

Latin America's position as a global mining powerhouse is supported by both its geology and ongoing investment activity. The region contains approximately 40% of the world's copper reserves and continues to attract significant investment. In Argentina alone, lithium projects saw $7.6 billion in capital deployment in 2025, contributing to a 66% increase in lithium production growth. Together, these factors reinforce Latin America's role as a critical supplier of the minerals needed to meet growing global demand.

As opportunities grow, so do operational challenges. Mining companies are increasingly being asked to improve productivity, reduce costs, and accelerate decision-making while managing more technically complex ore bodies. This has driven greater interest in technologies that help teams collect, validate, and utilize exploration data more effectively.

Trusting Data in a Complex Exploration Environment

Diana Catarino, Operations Manager, and her team attended Discoveries 2026. One of the strongest themes that conversations centered around was the growing importance of trusted data. Several mining companies highlighted the need to consolidate information from multiple sources into a single, reliable foundation for decision-making. Recognizing that fragmented or inconsistent data can impact confidence across exploration programs.

Discussions with mining companies also reinforced the industry's focus on data quality and operational control. Stakeholders spoke about the challenges created when critical drilling information is managed across disconnected systems or when ownership of data collection processes becomes unclear. The ability to improve QA/QC processes, maintain data integrity, and provide decisionmakers with confidence in exploration results continues to be a significant priority.

Directional Core Drilling generated significant attention from mining companies seeking greater confidence in drill planning and execution. Conversations around integrated data workflows also highlighted the ongoing demand for technologies that improve visibility and support better decision-making.

Beyond technology, continued engagement between mining companies, contractors, service providers, and industry stakeholders remains essential. Strong collaboration across the sector helps accelerate knowledge sharing and supports the adoption of practices that improve exploration outcomes throughout the region.

Looking Ahead

Latin America's exploration sector remains well positioned for continued growth. Demand for critical minerals, ongoing investment activity, and the increasing adoption of digital technologies are expected to drive further innovation across the mining value chain.

At the same time, the conversation is evolving beyond simply collecting more data. Mining companies are increasingly focused on collecting better data, improving confidence in exploration outcomes, and ensuring decisionmakers have access to the insights they need at the right time. As these priorities continue to develop, IMDEX remains committed to supporting the region with technical expertise, innovative solutions, and local partnerships that help mining teams operate more effectively, make smarter exploration decisions, and unlock greater value from their exploration programs across Latin America.
