Confident geological modelling starts with trusted orientation data

The challenge of core orientation

When drilling, the goal isn’t just to create a hole in the ground, it’s to extract the best possible sample of the geology beneath our feet. Every measurement taken from that sample: geochemistry, mineralogy, petrophysics, and especially structural data, depends on knowing precisely where the sample came from and its orientation at the time of extraction.

However the manual process of marking the red line on the core to indicate its orientation is prone to errors, and the significance of the mark is often not fully understood by those applying it, usually drillers. Mistakes in marking can go unnoticed for months, only to be discovered when data inconsistencies arise, potentially impacting entire projects.

Enhancing structural data quality with ACTx

ACTx is designed to eliminate these points of failure in the core orientation and marking process.

The solution provides drillers with a specialised marking jig that guides them to apply the orientation line precisely. The jig leverages its distinctive illuminated ring for precise alignment, and rigid slots on the face and side of the core to ensure marking accuracy.

This process provides a critical layer of assurance, ensuring precision and consistency in every mark whilst also digitally recording results for quality control. Drillers gain the confidence that what they deliver meets the highest standards for their customers.

A faster, smarter workflow

With an easier and more streamlined workflow, ACTx also boosts productivity at the rig without compromising safety:

  • The jig is rotated and not the inner tube full of core
  • There is no requirement to break joints in order to communicate with the downhole unit

All orientation and quality control data is synchronised with the HUB-IQ system. This means that geologists can start their day by reviewing a report of overnight drilling activities, instantly seeing whether all orientations were successful or if any issues need attention.

This immediate feedback gives geologists confidence in their logging and structural data collection, whilst speeding up their logging workflows.

Digital structural measurements with LOGRx

By digitising the core orientation process, ACTx ensures that every mark is traceable and auditable, empowering both drillers and geologists to work with greater confidence and efficiency. Geologists can trust that the structural information they collect, using tools like LOGRx, is based on accurately oriented core, reducing uncertainty and improving the reliability of geological models.

ioGAS, a specialised exploratory data analysis software empowers structural geology interpretation by seamlessly integrating geochemical data, spectral analysis from tools like aiSIRIS, and other geoscience datasets.

With advanced multivariate techniques such as PCA and UMAP, and dedicated support for structural workflows through stereonet and rose plot visualisations, ioGAS enables geologists to efficiently interpret structural orientations, delineate alteration zones and boundaries, and vector towards mineralisation with enhanced clarity and confidence.
